We took our three children for Umrah when the youngest was four years old.
I will be honest we had no idea what we were getting into.
The eldest was fine. Ten years old, curious about everything, wanted to see the Kaaba from the moment the plane landed. The middle one managed. The four year old was a complete adventure brilliant in moments, absolutely exhausted in others, and the logistics of managing her around five daily prayers in Makkah taught us things about planning that no travel guide had prepared us for.
We would do it again tomorrow. Every single bit of it. But we would do it differently in a few specific ways.
This article is about those specific ways.
The Hotel Distance Problem Nobody Talks About
Every parent who has taken young children to Makkah will tell you the same thing when you ask them what they would change.
They would have stayed closer to the Haram.
Here is why. In Makkah with children, you go to the Haram for every prayer. You go back to the hotel when children need to eat, rest, or simply recover from the stimulation and heat. You go back to the Haram. You return to the hotel again. This pattern repeats throughout the day and into the night.
If your hotel is 15 minutes from the Haram, every single one of those trips is a 30 minute round trip. With a tired four year old who does not want to walk anymore. In warm temperatures.
If your hotel is 5 minutes from the Haram, each trip is 10 minutes. The logistics of the day become manageable rather than exhausting.
This is the single most important practical decision for families booking Umrah from the UK. Not the price. Not the airline. The specific hotel and its specific walking distance from the nearest entrance of Masjid Al Haram.
Our Gold 4-star packages put you 5 to 7 minutes from the Haram. Our Platinum 5-star packages put you 2 to 3 minutes away — inside the Abraj Al Bait complex at Swissotel Makkah or Pullman Zamzam. For families with young children the difference between these two is real. For families with elderly grandparents travelling too, Platinum is not a luxury — it is what makes their full participation in the pilgrimage practically achievable.
Choosing the Right School Holiday Window
UK families have four main school holiday windows for Umrah. Each has different characteristics.
February Half-Term
February is genuinely our most recommended month for family Umrah from the UK. Temperatures in Makkah sit between 18 and 22 degrees Celsius — warm enough to feel the atmosphere of the holy cities, cool enough to walk to the Haram at any time of day without the heat becoming a challenge for children.
The half-term window is only a week which means a 7-night package is what fits comfortably. But 7 nights in Makkah and Madinah with the whole family is a complete and spiritually meaningful Umrah. Many families who choose February say the weather alone makes it their first recommendation to others.
Book February packages by October or November. School holiday windows fill from the family-demand end months ahead of the break itself.
Easter Holidays
Easter gives you two weeks which means a 10-night package is possible with comfortable travel days either side. Temperatures are warmer than February — typically 25 to 30 degrees — still manageable for children at any hour.
The two-week window is the main advantage of Easter over February. More time in the holy cities means more Tawaf, more prayers at the Haram, and a more complete experience for children who are old enough to absorb what they are seeing.
Book Easter packages by December or January.
Summer Holidays
July and August are the longest school holiday window and the hottest months in Saudi Arabia. Temperatures in Makkah reach 40 to 44 degrees.
For families this requires specific planning. Structure all Haram visits for Fajr before sunrise and after Maghrib in the evening when temperatures drop. The Haram itself is air-conditioned throughout — time inside the mosque is comfortable. The challenge is the outdoor walking between hotel and Haram, which is why we strongly recommend Gold or Platinum tier for summer travel.
Children cannot be outdoors in 42 degree heat for extended periods. A hotel 3 minutes from the Haram means brief exposure each visit. A hotel 15 minutes away means a genuine heat management challenge multiplied across every prayer and every Haram visit daily.
December Holidays
The school Christmas holidays align with some of the most comfortable weather Makkah offers. 20 to 24 degrees. Genuinely pleasant for outdoor Tawaf at any time of day. Cool enough for children to be comfortable, warm enough to feel the unique atmosphere of the holy cities.
December is very popular with UK families for exactly these reasons. Book December packages by July or August — family demand for this window means it fills earlier than most parents expect.
Practical Packing for Family Umrah
A few things experienced families consistently mention that first-timers do not think to pack.
A small pushchair or lightweight buggy for toddlers. The distances involved in Umrah — even from a Platinum hotel — are significant for very young children. A buggy that folds compactly is one of the best decisions we made.
A personal misting spray bottle for each child. The outdoor heat even in cooler months benefits from this simple tool during Tawaf.
Snacks in your bag for the Haram. Young children cannot always manage the timing between meals that adult pilgrims take for granted. Having something with you means you do not have to leave a prayer or a moment of worship to feed a hungry four year old.
Comfortable walking shoes for everyone. Not sandals. Proper walking shoes that support the feet through hours of pilgrimage activity.
A light cardigan or layer for each child. The Haram is air-conditioned and can feel genuinely cold inside, particularly at night, even when it is warm outside.
ATOL Protection — The Non-Negotiable for Families
When you are booking for a whole family, the financial stakes of an unprotected booking are multiplied. Four people. Five people. Six. Every additional family member increases the cost of getting it wrong.
Before booking any Umrah package for your family, verify ATOL protection at atol.org.uk. Every UK agency selling flight-inclusive packages is legally required to hold it. Without it your family's money has no legal protection.
Hajj and Umrah Experts holds ATOL licence 11375. Verify it at atol.org.uk. We have held continuous ATOL protection for over 10 years.
