For many UK Muslims, the decision to perform Umrah does not begin with a phone call to a travel agency.
It begins with Istikhara.
The intention is there. The desire is sincere. But uncertainty remains — about timing, about whether this is the right year, about which agency to trust, about the practicalities of leaving family and work. And so before anything else, before any booking, before any price comparison many UK Muslims turn to Salatul Istikhara.
This article covers the Istikhara dua fully — the Arabic text, the transliteration, the meaning, when to read it, and what to do practically after you have performed it.
What Is Istikhara?
Istikhara is a Sunnah prayer, Salatul Istikhara, performed to seek guidance from Allah before making a significant decision.
The word Istikhara comes from the Arabic root meaning to seek what is good (Khayr). In performing Istikhara, the believer acknowledges that Allah alone knows what is truly good for them, and asks Allah to facilitate the matter if it is good for their deen and their dunya — or to remove it from their path if it is not.
Istikhara is not exclusively for major life decisions. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught the Sahabah to perform Istikhara for matters great and small, including decisions about travel.
Performing Istikhara before booking Umrah is therefore not only appropriate; it is from the Sunnah.
The Hadith of Istikhara
Jabir ibn Abdullah (رضي الله عنه) narrated:
"The Prophet ﷺ used to teach us Istikhara in all matters just as he used to teach us a surah from the Quran."
(Sahih Bukhari)
This hadith establishes the importance of Istikhara across all matters — and the emphasis with which the Prophet ﷺ taught it to his companions.
How to Perform Salatul Istikhara
Step 1 - Make Wudu
Perform wudu (ablution) as you would for any Salah. Ensure you are in a state of purity before beginning.
Step 2 - Pray Two Rakats of Nafl
Pray two rakats of voluntary (Nafl) prayer. These two rakats are not Fard. They are specifically for Istikhara — performed with the intention of seeking Allah's guidance.
It is recommended to recite Surah Al-Kafirun in the first rakat after Al-Fatihah, and Surah Al-Ikhlas in the second rakat — though any surah is permissible.
Step 3 - Read the Istikhara Dua
After completing the two rakats, before making salaam or immediately after, raise your hands and read the Istikhara dua with sincere heart and full attention.
Istikhara Dua

Istikhara Dua — English Meaning
"O Allah, I seek Your guidance by Your knowledge, and I seek ability by Your power, and I ask You from Your great bounty. For indeed You are able, and I am not able, and You know, and I do not know, and You are the Knower of the unseen.
O Allah, if in Your knowledge this matter — (here mention the matter, i.e. performing Umrah in 2026) — is good for me in my religion, my livelihood and in the consequences of my affairs, then ordain it for me, make it easy for me, and bless me in it.
And if in Your knowledge this matter is bad for me in my religion, my livelihood and in the consequences of my affairs, then turn it away from me and turn me away from it, and ordain for me the good wherever it may be, and make me content with it."
Where to Mention "This Matter" in the Dua
In the hadith, at the point of "hadhal-amr" (this matter), the Prophet ﷺ indicated that the person should bring their specific matter to mind — or name it in their heart or aloud.
When performing Istikhara for Umrah — at this point, bring to mind your intention to perform Umrah from the UK in 2026. You may say it silently in your heart or, according to some scholars, name it aloud within the dua.
Additional Duas for Umrah 2026
Beyond Istikhara, there are several duas specifically for Umrah and travel that UK Muslims should know before departing.
Dua for Entering Ihram
When making the intention for Umrah at the Miqat and entering the state of Ihram:
Labbayk Allahumma 'Umratan
“Here I am O Allah, for Umrah.”
The Talbiyah
Recited continuously from the point of Ihram until beginning Tawaf:
Labbayk Allahumma labbayk, Labbayka la shareeka laka labbayk, Innal hamda wan-ni'mata laka wal-mulk, La shareeka lak.
“Here I am, O Allah, here I am. Here I am, You have no partner, here I am. Verily all praise, grace and sovereignty belong to You. You have no partner.”
Dua on First Seeing the Kaaba
Upon first sight of the Kaaba, raise your hands and make dua. This is a moment of accepted prayer.
The Prophet ﷺ said:
"When you see the House (the Kaaba), raise your hands and say whatever dua you wish, for this is one of the moments of accepted dua."
Many scholars recommend saying:
Allahumma antas-salam wa minkas-salam, hayyina rabbana bis-salam.
“O Allah, You are As-Salam (Peace) and from You comes peace. Keep us alive, our Lord, in peace.”
Dua for Travel
When departing from your home for Umrah:
“In the name of Allah, I place my trust in Allah, and there is no might nor power except with Allah.”
Dua When Boarding the Aircraft
Subhanal-ladhi sakhkhara lana hadha wa ma kunna lahu muqrinin, wa inna ila Rabbina lamunqalibun.
"Glory be to the One who has made this subservient to us, and we were not capable of it, and indeed to our Lord we shall return."
(Surah Az-Zukhruf 43:13-14)
Dua When Entering Makkah
Allahumma hadha haramuka wa amnuka, faharrimni 'alan-nar, wa amminni min 'adhabika yawma tab'athu 'ibadak, waj'alni min awliya'ika wa ahli ta'atik.
"O Allah, this is Your sanctuary and Your place of safety. So protect me from the Fire, and secure me from Your punishment on the Day You resurrect Your servants. And make me among Your close allies and those who obey You."
What to Do After Istikhara
Does Istikhara Require a Dream?
No. This is one of the most common misunderstandings about Istikhara.
Istikhara does not require a dream. It does not require a feeling of light or darkness. It does not require a specific sign.
After performing Istikhara, the believer proceeds with what they were inclined toward — or what becomes easiest for them. Allah's answer to Istikhara often comes through the ease or difficulty with which a matter progresses — not through a dream or a specific feeling.
If after Istikhara you remain uncertain — repeat it. Scholars generally recommend repeating Istikhara up to seven times on consecutive days or over several days for major decisions.
