Every year in the UK, I overhear the same predicament that Muslim Communities encounter.
A community member finds an enticing deal for an Umrah trip: the price is within budget, the hotel is decent, and a licensed travel agency is offering it. So they make a deposit or pay in full. And then the deal falls apart.
The agency loses funds. Tickets are cancelled. In the end, the pilgrim has spent thousands, with no refund, and no pilgrim.
It is hard to believe how common this problem is and how little people know it.
The One Question Every UK Muslim Needs To Ask Before Booking Umrah Packages
Before checking the hotel amenities (even star ratings).
Before comparing departure and arrival times.
Before looking at the price.
You must ask, is this agency ATOL protected?
ATOL is an acronym for Air Travel Organiser's License, a subset of travel protection established and enforced by the British Civil Aviation Authority. Travel agencies lawfully licensed under ATOL are legally registered to sell travel packages with flight integrations, including an Umrah package.
What are its benefits? Here's a breakdown:
For instance, if your travel agency with ATOL protection goes bankrupt, you can get a complete refund. However, if the agency goes bankrupt after you leave on your journey, ATOL will let you complete the journey or arrange for you to be escorted back home. Travel expenses will be reimbursed for the entire trip.
If there is no ATOL protection, you could lose money, and there are no legal protections.
How to Verify the Umrah Agency's ATOL Protection
It takes less than 2 minutes and can save you a lot of money.
Visit atol.org.uk, and enter the agency name provided with ATOL protection or their ATOL licence number in the search box. If they come up, they're in the system. If nothing shows up, they are not in the system, and there is no need to continue.
Legitimate travel agencies will have their ATOL number listed everywhere on their website, including the footer and the booking tabs. If you don't see the number everywhere on their website, consider it a warning sign.
This is the case for Hajj and Umrah Experts, and their ATOL licence number is 11375, which you can verify and cross-check on the CAA website at any time.
What to Actually Look for in Umrah Packages 2026
Considering that ATOL is taken care of, your selection of the right package this year for the pilgrimage should be as follows:
1. What is Really Included?
It's apparent, but it's a totally open-ended assumption. There could be a myriad of complete package deals at broadly the same prices.
An Umrah package should cover the essentials in its offerings:
Flights - Leaving and returning to your local UK airport. This can be London, Birmingham, Manchester, or Bradford. Confirm which departure city is included.
Visa - The agency should shoulder the entire burden when it comes to the Saudi Umrah visa. Ideally, you should not spend a minute on the application yourself.
Accommodation in Makkah - You should know the name of the hotel, the star rating, and most importantly, the distance to Masjid Al Haram. When you are praying multiple times a day, a 10-minute walk is not the same as a 3-minute walk.
Accommodation in Madinah - Same questions apply. How close is Masjid an-Nabawi?
Ground transport - Everything. This is all inclusive.
Meals - some packages include breakfast or half board. Others include nothing. Know what you are getting before you pay.
2. The Star Rating Question - What Level Actually Suits You?
Clients often go either too far or not far enough in this regard.
3-Star Umrah Packages are far from the worst option. A young, healthy pilgrim, or someone making the trip alone, can be perfectly content in a clean and practical 3-star hotel a stone's throw from the Haram. After all, the experience is in the Haram— not your hotel. Many pilgrims who select 3-star packages enjoy the lack of overwhelming complexity and distractions, enabling them to devote themselves fully to their worship.
For families, first-time Umrah participants looking for something less stressful, or people wanting a more convenient place to start their pilgrimage, the 4-Star Umrah Packages offer better value. These hotels offer more spacious accommodations and are closer to the Haram. Breakfast is usually included in the packages, and the improvements in comfort, with larger hotel rooms, are noticeable.
For some pilgrims, 5-Star and Platinum Packages are worth every dollar. Imagine being just two minutes from the entrance to the Masjid Al Haram. This means heading to the mosque for early morning Fajr prayers is just minutes away, and making wudu can be done in the hotel room. For many elderly pilgrims, Umrah is expected to be the journey of a lifetime. For fellow Umrah pilgrims with health and mobility challenges, this proximity is worth every dollar spent.
Hajj and Umrah Experts offer 3-star budget packages as well as 5-star Platinum packages with views of the Haram or Kaaba from the hotel rooms. The hotels include Swissotel, Pullman Zamzam, Al Marwa Rayhaan by Rotana, and Hilton Madinah, among others.
3. Departure from City - Not All Packages are the Same
For example, packages from London Heathrow may look appealing to a Manchester resident. Still, in reality, the value is limited and more of a burden, given the travel time, parking expenses, stress, and the need for a long morning drive to another city.
Hajj and Umrah Experts have packages departing from multiple airports in the UK for Muslims. This means the majority of UK Muslims can travel to their pilgrimage destination with less discomfort and with shorter queues at the mosque.
4. The Ministry of Hajj Approval
ATOL secures your money. However, you should also verify whether the Saudi Ministry of Hajj and Umrah approves the agency.
This approval means the agency can officially handle Umrah visas and service them in accordance with Saudi laws. Without this approval, there can be hurdles with the visa and entering the Kingdom.
Hajj and Umrah Experts have also received official approval from the Saudi Ministry of Hajj and Umrah, which is independent from their ATOL approval in the UK.
How early is too early? When is the right time to book Umrah in 2026?
Most UK pilgrims tend to ask this question way too late.
The truth is, as early as you can, and this is the reason why:
The best hotels, especially those closest to the Haram, are in short supply. As you get closer to peak time/dates, there are fewer options available, and prices skyrocket. Hotels that were £80 a night in January are now £150 a night in March for the same time.
For Ramadan Umrah: If you are planning to perform Umrah during Ramadan, especially during the final 10 nights, you should be looking for packages now! Bookings for Ramadan 2026, with trusted agencies, are already being taken. According to scholars, the additional spiritual reward of Umrah in Ramadan is equivalent to that of Hajj, which explains the demand.
Easter, summer, and February half-term holidays are most popular with schools. If your travel dates are linked to school terms, do not wait until holidays are just a few weeks away to book. These holidays are booked many months in advance.
The best time for Umrah, with fewer crowds and better prices, is during October and November, according to Mohammed Hijazi.
Talking About Cheap vs Value
There is a fine line between cheap and value.
Sometimes, cheap means lots of corners have been cut, like in hotel quality, distance to the Haram, visa support and services, or support if something goes wrong.
Don't rely on the headline price to make a quick assessment; look at all the details. Just because a package looks £200 cheaper, it doesn't mean it includes flights. The hotel may be far from the Haram, the visa service may cost extra, and other services may cost extra.
Value (and the picture you should look at) is not just the flight and hotel. It's thanks to ATOL protection, support, and proper transport. So the package price is based on all those factors too.
